You must be wondering "Where does the name of this renowned Buenos Aires café come from?" ("Los Dos Chinos" means "The Two Chinese Men"). Could it be related to an Oriental family or a story from a faraway continent? Actually, it isn't. Its origin is quite Argentinian. The current owners tell us that the façade of the original shop had two large niches that were used to place two large statues of Chinese men, which were bought on a ship that had stopped at the old city port. The "sphinxes" became a trademark of the corner of Chacabuco and Alsina, which would later be called "the corner of the two Chinese men." When it opened in 1862, its owner gave it the name for which it had become popular. The café thrived in those times and it sold cakes, pastries and other delicacies which were consumed by a society that had not yet chosen to become a slave to dieting and the ideal of super-thin women. Today the coffee shop is located in our district and has preserved all of its history and traditional flavors.
