Severo Vaccaro: as a kid he was a "canillita" (in Buenos Aires, a boy that distributes and sells newspapers on the street); when he was older he became a "sales manager" for the magazine "Caras y Caretas." As the story goes, in the early 20th century he began collecting drawings, illustrations and cartoons in a lottery ticket shop and foreign exchange office he had on Avenida de Mayo. After his death, his brother Vicente created the "Fundación Severo Vaccaro" (Severo Vaccaro Foundation) and in 1950 he opened the "Museo de la Caricatura" (Cartoon Museum). This museum includes originals of the most important Argentine cartoonists, which have been hung closely together on the walls of a large colonial-style house in the Buenos Aires district of Constitución. While making the tour, the first important stop is the room dedicated to "Caras y Caretas," in which you will see that the social and political messages of the cartoons still seem to apply to today's world. For example, on the cover of an edition from 1940, the pound sterling and the dollar mercilessly "crush" the peso. A "star" of the museum is "Mickey Gaucho," a drawing made by Walt Disney during his visit to Argentina in 1941. This Museum is "the only one of its kind in South America," according to the museum bulletins.
